New Site Design
It's always been called Joel's Improved Personal Website, but recently I changed the design.
The theme is thoroughly midwestern, including as its main motifs elements such as pine wood, fish, squirrels, and an almanac-type feel. Rather than placing letters right on top of the pine background, as before, they are on a plain light-yellow background, making it much easier to read. The site now uses ten point fonts for legibility on all computers, and headings are now a dark green.
Almost all of the graphics, including the new header graphic, were created using PaintShop Pro and/or the Animation Shop that comes with it. The fish, birds, etc., were created from extended characters of the Webdings typeface, which is available on the Microsoft Typography web site. The actual font of the title graphic is an English Gothic font that came with AutoCAD R14, and reflects my Mennonite heritage.
The authentic "advertisements" come from old Minnesota newspapers of the late 1800's an early 1900's. They are copied out of the 1988 book Coffee Made Her Insane, a compilation of stuff from old Minnesota newspapers, but the copyright on the ads has expired by now. The spot illustrations come out of a Victorian clip-art book.
Two other features of the site are the cool mouseovers (the best example is on the Blue Ice page) and the quotes at the bottom of each page. To learn more about the mouseover effect, go to this site.
